Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, April 15 at Berkemier Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.Mr. Johnson was born on Aug. 22, 1947, in El Dorado, KS. He and his brother, Kenny, were adopted in 1954 by John and Emma (Switchfigure) Johnson and they resided in El Dorado. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on March 3, 1965 and earned the Bronze Star and Purple Heart during his service to the United States while in Vietnam. Mr. Johnson was honorably discharged as a private March 1, 1968.He married Doreen Steeg on Aug. 24, 1968 in North Sioux City.Mr. Johnson liked watching TV and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed researching and learning about gold prospecting and lost treasures.He is survived by his wife; three sons, Duane (Michille) Johnson of Vermillion, Brian (Crista) Johnson of Jefferson and John (Meghan) Johnson of Burbank; and seven grandchildren.He is preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Kenneth Duane Johnson; a stepbrother, Melvin Pettyjohn; a father-in-law, Lowell Steeg; and a mother-in-law, Christine Steeg.

Online condolences can be made at www.christysmith.com.Virginia Ruth (Madison) Hogeboom was born on Nov. 29, 1916, on the family farm near Dakota City, to Peter R. and Olga C. (Pedersen) Madison. She attended grade school at the Metz Rural School and graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1933. In 1934 and 1935, she helped her father sell truck farm produce at the Madison Farm Market at West Fifth and Perry streets in Sioux City.From 1936 to 1942, she taught two years each in three different rural schools in Dakota County, Neb. Upon completion of the two-year teaching course at Wayne State College in 1943, she began teaching the elementary grades in Sioux City at Riverview and Smith schools. During the war years, she did office work on summer jobs at a shipyard in Wilmington, Calif., and at a tent factory in Denver, Colo.She married Charles E. Hogeboom on Oct. 12, 1946, at First Lutheran Church in South Sioux City. The couple lived in South Sioux City until 1957 when they moved to the Riverside neighborhood of Sioux City, where her husband had become manager of the Riverside Burke Lumber and Coal Co.Virginia resumed teaching in 1961 in the Sioux City schools, first as a substitute teacher and then as a Title I reading teacher at Sacred Heart School. Upon completion of her BS degree at Morningside College in 1971, she taught Title I reading at Riverview School until her retirement in 1982.She belonged to Riverside Lutheran Church, where she served in many capacities. She was also a member of Sioux City Retired Educators, Iowa Retired Teachers, Laura Chapter Order of Eastern Star in South Sioux City, where she was a 75-year member and Past Matron, and American Legion Auxiliary in Elk Point, S.D.Virginia loved caring for plants and flowers, and enjoyed reading.
